Camel Skin Lamps
Camel skin lamps are a beautiful, romantic and unique hereditary art form, renowned worldwide for the intricate handwork of skilled artisans. The skin is first cleaned until it becomes transparent, then stretched on clay moulds to take its shape, and finally hand-painted with indigenously prepared lacquer colours. The art is known locally as Naqashi.
Floral and geometric patterns, royal Mughal courts, portraits, landscapes, hunting scenes, animals and birds are painted with masterly skill. Camel skin lamps are durable and long-lasting — with occasional varnishing they can serve for fifty to a hundred years.
