Himalayan Salt Lamp Guide: How to Choose, Use and Care for a Real Salt Lamp

A Himalayan salt lamp is a block of pink rock salt with a small bulb inside. When it is switched on, the crystal glows a warm amber-orange that makes a bedroom, reading corner or living room feel calm and cosy. At Magnum Traders we carve salt lamps from crystals mined in the foothills of the Himalayas in Pakistan — the only place genuine Himalayan salt comes from. This guide explains how to choose a good lamp and look after it.
Where real Himalayan salt comes from
True Himalayan pink salt is mined in the Salt Range of Punjab, Pakistan, around the historic Khewra mine. The salt formed from ancient sea beds millions of years ago and its pink, orange and red tones come from natural minerals such as iron. Every crystal is different, so no two lamps look exactly alike.

How to spot a real salt lamp
- Soft, uneven glow. Real salt glows unevenly because the crystal has natural layers and veins. A perfectly even, bright glow often means a plastic or glass imitation.
- It is fragile. Rock salt chips if you knock it hard. Very tough lamps that survive drops are usually not salt.
- Natural colour variation. Look for shades from pale pink to deep orange, often with white streaks.
- It reacts to moisture. In humid rooms a real lamp can feel slightly damp when it is off — that is normal for salt.
Choosing the right size and shape
For a bedside table or desk, a natural lamp of 2–3 kg gives a gentle night-light glow. For a living room, choose 5–8 kg or a pair of lamps. Carved shapes such as the pyramid, moon and duck salt lamps make decorative gifts, while fire bowls filled with salt chunks give a stronger, spread-out light.

Benefits: what to realistically expect
Most people buy salt lamps for their light. The warm, low glow is relaxing in the evening and works well as a night light because it contains very little blue light. You will often read claims that salt lamps purify the air or release negative ions; scientific evidence for a noticeable health effect is limited, so we recommend enjoying your lamp as a beautiful, natural light rather than a medical device.
How to care for your salt lamp
- Keep it dry. Do not use it in bathrooms or next to kettles and humidifiers. Place it on the wooden base or a small coaster.
- Leave it on. Switching it on for a few hours a day keeps the salt warm and stops it from “sweating” in humid weather.
- Clean with a dry cloth. If needed, wipe with a slightly damp cloth while the lamp is off, then switch it on to dry.
- Use the right bulb. A 15–25 W bulb is ideal. Replace the cord or bulb if they are damaged.
