Camel Skin Lamps: The Naqashi Art of Multan Explained

Camel skin lamps are one of Pakistan’s most recognisable handicrafts. Lit from inside, the thin, translucent skin glows like stained glass and shows off the hand-painted patterns on its surface. The craft is centred in Multan in southern Punjab, where families have passed the skills down for generations.

What is Naqashi?

Naqashi is the local name for the art of decorating surfaces with fine painted patterns. On camel skin lamps it means floral motifs, geometric borders and, on special pieces, scenes inspired by Mughal miniature painting — royal courts, hunting scenes, birds and animals. The colours are made from traditional lacquers and are painted entirely by hand.

How a camel skin lamp is made

  1. Cleaning. The skin is cleaned and treated until it becomes thin and almost transparent.
  2. Shaping. While still soft, it is stretched over a clay mould in the shape of the lamp or vase and left to dry. Once hard, the clay is broken out, leaving a light, rigid shell.
  3. Painting. Artisans outline the design and fill it with lacquer colours — this stage can take days for a large piece.
  4. Finishing. The lamp is varnished for shine and protection and fitted with a base and electrics.

How to choose a good camel skin lamp

  • Look at the painting. Fine, even lines and crisp colour edges show an experienced artist.
  • Check the glow. A well-prepared skin lets light through evenly without dark patches.
  • Pick the right size. Small lamps suit side tables and shelves; large vase-shaped lamps make a statement in a hallway or living room.
  • Think about colour. Warm oranges and reds suit traditional rooms; turquoise and multicolour designs stand out in modern spaces.

Caring for your lamp

Camel skin lamps are durable and can last for decades. Dust them with a soft dry brush or cloth, keep them away from water and direct heat, and re-varnish every few years to keep the colours bright. Use a low-heat LED bulb.
